WHAT IS DEMODEX?

Image
This is what it is... Demodex refers to a genus of microscopic mites that naturally inhabit the skin and hair follicles of mammals, including humans. These mites, specifically Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, are commonly found in the facial area, particularly around the eyelashes, eyebrows, and other sebaceous glands. While Demodex mites are generally considered commensal organisms, meaning they coexist harmlessly with their host, an overpopulation of these mites can lead to certain dermatological conditions. For instance, an excessive proliferation of Demodex mites has been associated with skin disorders such as rosacea and blepharitis, which can cause inflammation, redness, and irritation. Therefore, understanding Demodex mites and their role in dermatological health is crucial for managing and treating associated skin conditions effectively.
